| Athletes have long understood and utilized the concept testing in their lives. We
test throughout our academic lives and we test our career objectives and abilities through
goal setting and target.
Regardless of career, sport or vocation, we measure our success based on results and sport
performance is no different. Athletes strive to improve their weaknesses, yet, are left
wondering if they are hitting the mark, which often leads to lost interest and in some cases
program termination
As fitness professionals, we understand this plight, and in order to offer our athletes
with the highest level of programming, we offer the highest level of testing.
Whether you are novice or elite athlete testing is the key to your success. Testing
gives you the motivation and feedback that your efforts are working and provides facilitators
with the statistic to ensure you are on the appropriate program for you.
At NTC, we understand that different athletes require different programs
(see off-ice programs). With this in mind, our athletes are
tested regularly with all testing result communicated to them.
To efficiently train athletes we must efficiently test. There is no hiding this fact!
Due to the time commitment required to be successful each athlete must be tested frequently
and appropriately.
In order to ensure the testing is accurate NTC considers;
- Establish age and level appropriate testing;
- Results serve as information for facilitators and as motivation for athletes
- Testing reports must offer clarity and ease of comprehension as it is vital to program compliance.
Testing frequency;
- Off-season - Every 6 weeks
- In season - Every 9 weeks
Athletes
In order to be succeeding at training, athletes require test results for feedback and program
compliance.
The athletes must;
- understand their benchmarks
- understand testing
- Experience their progress
- Be Tested appropriately (Elite Vs Minor Hockey)
- Set goals for training
Facilitators
Athletes are required to arrive prepared for each session and NTC facilitators are no different.
NTC's facilitators prepare programs based on testing feedback and athletic requirements.
Our staff the subscribe the following guidelines;
- Understand the physiological requirements of their athletes
- Determine weaknesses and strengths for program prescription
- Require data for program updates/upgrades (IE: Cardiovascular endurance Vs. muscular endurance)
- testing provides facilitators with the necessary insight to ensure program design remains current and individualized.
The lack of testing diminishes the testing and ensures that individualized programs are not being offered to the athletes.
Test first, test, often and review your test scores. Once you have followed these steps, you can begin to focus on your training program.
To ensure testing specifity, NTC is happy to offer two levels of testing;
Elite Testing
Athletes have long understood and utilized the concept intensity in their training.
They understand anaerobic threshold and its importance in sport training. It is what
distinguishes the elite and creates the edge! Like any sport, an athlete must have
the proper tools and equipment to assist him in performing his sport to the utmost of his
capabilities. Oxygen based VO2max testing is one of those essential training tools
because it is the ultimate indicator of cardiovascular fitness. The values generated
by the testing correlate to specific heart rates and training zones from which training
programs can be designed. Resting metabolic rate testing is the other essential
training tool because an athlete's metabolism is directly linked to the amount of lean
muscle mass that he/she carries.
In order to maximize your training, and ensure your program is individual to you, you must
test regularly. You must understand your VO2max scores and you must understand and
use your training zones!
National Training Centres now provides this professional fitness testing for all teams and
individual athletes looking to maximize their training results. With the CardioCoach,
MetaCheck and Win Gate equipment from Korr Medical Technologies, IMETT, Woodway and Monark, NTC
is able to provide the most advanced testing protocols that compliment deliver accurate fitness
testing that measures key data including the following:
- max VO2
- anaerobic threshold
- leg and total power output
- the precise amount of calories burned at all exercise heart rate levels
- recovery rate
- resting metabolic rate
To date, athletes or individuals could only obtain these values through estimation or from a
costly trip to a university or hospital research center.
BUT NOW......
National Training Centres facilitates these testing protocols and will come right to your door to
do so. The testing is mobile so that any individual or facility can have access to this
technology and education regardless of budget, staff, or time restraints.
Minor Hockey Testing
Athletes have long understood and utilized the concept intensity in their training. They
understand anaerobic threshold and its importance in sport training. Like any sport, an
athlete must have the proper tools and equipment to assist him in performing his sport to the
utmost of his capabilities. Establishing cardiovascular fitness, core strength and upper
and lower body strength, endurance and power are vital values to understand in program
prescription and program compliance.
The data collected during the minor hockey test provides age, and skill specific feedback
essential in program prescription.
In order to maximize your training, and ensure your program is individual to you, you must test
regularly and you must understand your scores and you must understand your weakness.

Adding functional "FUN" to conditioning programs!
Over the last 10 years athletes, trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, therapists
and coaches have understood the value of "riding bikes" for hockey athletes. The
anaerobic and aerobic demands placed on hockey athletes is high, and although regular training
is great, "spin classes" (simultaneous group bike riding) offer great value in developing
these areas.
